Ontario Establishing Patient and Family Advisory Council

Council to Advise on Improving Health Care, Patient Experience

Ontario is creating a Patient and Family Advisory Council to advise government on health policy priorities that have an impact on patient care and patient experiences in Ontario. 

The council will involve patients, families, and caregivers in the policy development process, ensuring that their needs and concerns are fully understood, and will help the health system become more responsive, transparent and accountable. Members of the council will be chosen through a public process that includes opportunities to nominate suitable candidates.

The creation of a Patient and Family Advisory Council is a component of Ontario's Open Government initiative and supports the province's efforts to promote Open Dialogue.

Improved and expanded patient engagement is part of the government's plan to build a better Ontario through its Patients First: Action Plan for Health Care, which provides patients with faster access to the right care, better home and community care, the information they need to live healthy, and a health care system that is sustainable for generations to come.

  • The development of a Patient and Family Advisory Council is based on feedback received by the government through close collaboration with Health Quality Ontario, and in consultation with many partners in health care, especially patients from across the province.
